Except among ornithologists and waterborne holiday makers, Norfolk is not one of the best known of English counties and is sometimes dismissed as flat, boring and rather out of the way. Yet its landscape, without being dramatic, is mostly undulating and pleasingly fertile. It is intensely farmed and has a wealth of man made features from prehistoric to modern times. It is also surprisingly varied. Among the regional delights are the dry, sandy Breckland with its modern forests, the watering meanderings of broadland, huge areas of carefully managed Fen and marshland, and a gaunt but intensely atmospheric coastline.
